Walking, Crafting, and Connection across Williamstown and Spotswood

The Williamstown Community and Education Centre (WCEC) has long helped build valuable community connections by offering simple group activities that local people can join.

In 2025, the Hobsons Bay Community Fund was really happy to provide grants to two of WCEC's programs which have that effect: the weekly Walking Group based at the Joan Kirner House in Williamstown (a grant of $2,800) and Craft, Coffee and Chat sessions at Spotswood Community House (a grant of $2,500). Both programs have created relaxed, welcoming environments where residents—including long-term locals, older people, and new people moving to Hobsons Bay —can get out, build skills, and get to know their neighbours.

The craft mornings at the Spotswood Community House came at a crucial time for the neighbourhood. With the Union Quarter development opening right across the road, bringing 332 new apartments and more than 500 new residents to the area, the event provided a practical, approachable way for new neighbours to meet one another and get involved in the local community. The grant funding set up the drop-in group, which supported over 11 local crafters and has now become an ongoing program.

Meanwhile, the weekly walking group, based at the Williamstown centre, engaged 38 participants over the school terms. As the centre noted, the walk itself was only part of the draw. Participants routinely spent twice as much time having morning tea and catching up at the centre as they did walking, using the time to build friendships and connect with broader local support that WCEC provides.

These projects highlight why practical, place-based funding matters. By backing small, trusted local programs, we can help community hubs build lasting relationships and strengthen long-term wellbeing across Hobsons Bay.
