Grants in Action

Light Movement & Dance for Wellbeing at Walker Close Community Centre.

On Tuesday afternoons, Walker Close Community Centre in Altona North has been opening up for a mix of gentle movement, music, and easy conversation.

Many local women face practical barriers to joining regular exercise or community classes, such as cost, language, or finding a comfortable, beginner-friendly option. To help, a $4,000 grant from the Hobsons Bay Community Fund allowed Walker Close to run a free 20-week program called Light Movement & Dance for Wellbeing.

An experienced instructor leads the one-hour classes, which focus on light stretching, gentle movement, and relaxation. No complicated routines to learn, and no experience needed. The classes offer a supportive space where women can move at their own pace.

After class, participants stay for light snacks and drinks. This relaxed time gives residents a chance to meet neighbours, chat, and build local connections.

The program coordinator says the sessions are going well, with the group coming together each week and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

This practical local project brings real benefits. By supporting Walker Close Community Centre, we help a trusted place give residents a free and easy way to look after their physical and mental health.

This program is running on Tuesday afternoons until November, so get in touch with the centre to join in.
