North Altona Early Childhood Centre

thumb_chicken coopWhat came first - the chicken or the egg?

The children of North Altona's Early Childhood Centre are willing to solve this age old question.

As 2011 Hobsons Bay Community Fund grant recipients, they now have a brand new chicken coop, complete with chickens raised in an incubator housed inside their playroom.

The children have been enthusiastically following the daily progress of the life cycle of an egg, to baby chick, to fledgling life in the new coop.

Centre director, Rachelle Cook said "the HBCF Grant will go hand in hand with the Centre's current food recycling project. It will enable the children to take responsibility for the chickens and then extend their interest in other ways towards sustainability and the environment."

The coop occupies pride of place in the garden which also benefits the children of the Yooralla West early intervention program and the childcare centre located next door.
